Educational Support St. Laurence College provides a range of support services designed to create a friendly, safe and caring environment within the school. Evening Study St. Laurence College offers an optional evening study programme which provides students with a quiet and peaceul environment in which to complete homework, exam revision and other study tasks. Fully supervised, the programme is particularly recommended for students who might be disturbed by radio, tv and other distractions at home. The evening study programme lasts 3 hours Monday through Thursday.
Homework Club The school also provides a homework club for junior students lasting one and half hours after school. Guidance The guidance programme at St. Laurence College is special. Every senior student, has one timetabled guidance class per week. Areas covered include personal, educational, social and vocational guidance. Topics include: drug education, study skills, time management, bullying, relationship education, career research, communication skills and preparation for the world of work. The students and parents may also make appointments
to see the Guidance Counsellor, who is available to provide advice and support.
Tutor and Year Head System Each student is assigned one teacher as a tutor. The students and tutor meet once a week. The tutor helps and encourages the students to do their best, monitors thier progress and deals with any discipline problems which arise. Year heads support the tutor system and provide further assistance and guidance. Discipline for Learning Through the school's Discipline for Learning programme, good behaviour is positively rewarded and reinforced. The highest standards of conduct and courtesy are expected from all students. School rules and the school code of discipline are strictly enforced. The college system of discipline is firm but fair, and at all times takes into account an individual's needs and abilities. Home School Community Liaison St. Laurence College has a full time Home School Community Liaison co-ordinator, whose role is to promote active cooperation between home, school and relevant community agencies with the aim of furthering students' educational interests. The scheme encourages parents to be aware of their own capacities to enhance their children's educational progress, and to assist them to develop relevant skills. It is also a preventative strategy designed to help students at risk of not reaching their potential in the educational system due to factors which may affect the student's achievement and continuation in school. Students with Special Needs St. Laurence College has a policy of identifying special needs of students at an early age and working with parents to ensure they recieve extra help and support. In both small group sessions and on an individual basis from specially trained teachers working closely with the Home School Community Liaison coordinator and the guidance counsellor. |
