Collier Digs Deep but St Laurence’s Win the Day

Leinster Girls’ U17 ‘A’ Cup in Drogheda:

Lauren Collier’s second-half hat-trick was not enough to stop St Laurence College qualifying for the last eight of the Leinster U17 ‘A’ Cup.  The Shelbourne player’s third goal was particularly impressive as she struck with force from 30 metres and sailed into the top corner, leaving St Laurence College with the prospect of a nervous final seven minutes.

GOALS:

The Loughlinstown side gave a wonderful display of total football in the first half, and went into a 4-0 lead with goals from Katie Doyle (2), Clara Mulligan and Leinster player, Paula Belenguer.   They could have added to this total on 25 minutes, as Angel Finnerty’s power strike cannoned off the crossbar, when a goal seemed certain.  Sacred Heart goalkeeper, Katie Branagan, also pulled off some fine saves to thwart further attempts from Clara Mulligan and Amy Forde.

The second half was more competitive and even the soaking wet conditions couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of both teams.  The Drogheda side launched a wave of attacks, with some good moves from Collier, Cliona Smith and Erin McDonagh, but the St Laurence defence managed to keep them at bay, with Michaela Fox Walsh and Laragh Geoghagan to the fore.

RELIEF:

The pressure was relieved somewhat with six minutes remaining when with a fine piece of skill from Katie Doyle.  Katie had an eventful game – she netted a brace of goals in the first half, was forced to leave the field for some time due to injury, before rejoining the play just in time to receive a pass from Shauna Lonergan Berry and beat two opponents before setting Clara Mulligan up with a inch-perfect cross-field pass.  Clara dribbled 35 yards and finished with aplomb, to send the Yellows into the quarter-finals.
