Retirements 2007

On May 30 th 2007 St. Laurence College marked the retirement of two long standing teachers and two other important members of staff.

Aileen Aherne and Ann McNamara both retired from teaching this year after a joint 50 years of service in education at St. Laurence College.

Ms. Aherne taught Domestic Science to all forms and Horticulture to 4th years. For the six months to December 2006 she oversaw the refurbishment of the Domestic Science Room so that it is now a state-of-the-art facility. Over the years Aileen has made a great contribution to liturgical, and indeed all other celebrations at the school. She served for six years on the Board of Management of the school.

Ms. Ann McNamara taught Maths in the school as well as LCVP to senior students. In recent years she has been on secondment to the Department of Education and Science providing in-service to teachers throughout the country. Ms. McNamara also served six years on the Board of Management.

Two other members of staff retired from the school this year. Ms. Peggy Williams ran the canteen shop for over 15 years and was noted for the easy and smiling way she provided that service. Her connection with the College goes back before these 15 years when, as a parent, her children attended the College.

Sr. Anne Turner, a Sister of the Cenacle, retired from the College after three years as Chaplain. Sr. Anne introduced this new role to the College, providing a listening ear to staff and students, putting on retreats for all six year groups and organising liturgical and other prayer experiences.

At the Eucharist celebrated on May 30th , the Feast of the Visitation, the school community gave thanks to God for the service of these ‘four powerful women’ and asked God’s blessing on their lives in the future.
