About the Marianists

The Marianists are an international religious order of brothers and priests who came to Ireland in 1967 from the U.S.. Since then, four Irish men have made life commitments to the congregation while a few of the Americans who came to Ireland in the early years continue to minister here.

The order is distinguished by certain charisms, or gifts given by God for the benefit of the Church. These charisms guide all Marianist programmes and works.

People of Faith

As spiritual individuals, Marianists strive to carry out God’s will in their service to others.

Followers of Mary

Marianists view Mary as the model of discipleship. Just as Mary gave birth to Jesus, Marianists seek to bring the presence of Jesus to life within themselves and others.

People of Community

Marianists believe that living, praying and supporting one another in community enriches their faith and strengthens their ability to meet world challenges - especially problems associated with poverty and lack of education.

Discipleship of Equals

Brothers and priests share equal status within the Society of Mary.

Leaders in Mission

The Marianist mission is to bring Christ to the world and to work for the coming of His kingdom.

Marianist Links

The gifts outlined above are found in the Marianist religious order but they also inspire and are lived by groups of associated Christians. These lay Marianists have grown in number in recent years and have developed their own international connections.

The Marianists brothers and priests are delighted to share information about their lives with anybody interested in considering the Marianist religious life.

Fr. Mike offers a "Mini-Course" on the Gospel of Matthew

Fr. Mike is teaching a "mini-course" on the Gospel of Matthew this year. This is similar to the one he taught on the Gospel of Luke last year and is intended to help people to get more from the Sunday readings, as Matthew will be the Gospel for the coming year.

This part of the course will be on four Monday evenings at 8 p.m. in St. Columba's, the Marianist Community, beginning February 11. These will deal with the second part of the Gospel and the Passion and Resurrection accounts. All are welcome.

Thank you
Sr. Maria José Jauregui, F.M.I.
has now returned to her work in Rome as Head of Education for the Marianist Sisters and Bro. Gobi Torres Nazario, S.M. has returned to his university studies in Mexico. We thank them both for their contributions to the community and wish them well in their apostolic work.

Beatification of Four Spanish Marianist Martyrs

On 28 October 2007, four Marianists were among the nearly 500 Spanish martyrs beatified in Rome. They were executed during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1938.

Welcome Sr. Maria José Jauregui

Early in October we were joined by Sr. Maria José Jauregui. Sr. Maria José, a Spanish Marianist Sister, will be a member of the community until mid-December.

Sister is the Head of Education for the Marianist Sisters throughout the world and has taken time out from her work to live with us in Ireland so as to improve her English.

Comings and Goings in the Marianist Community

Bro. Tom Wendorf, a Marianist Brother from the U.S., recently spent some time with the community before journeying to do missionary work in India. Tom is an professor of English at the University of Dayton. During the next two months he will be teaching the young Indian Brothers living near Bangalore.

Bro. Gerry McAuley is also on the move as he begins his sabbatical year, studying and living in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

We wish them both well in their work and travels.

Welcome Bro. Gobi

During the past summer, the Marianist Community was joined by Bro. Gobi Torres Nazario. Gobi is from Mexico and has come to Ireland, to live in community and to improve his English. He will stay until mid-December when he will return to Puebla where he will continue his university studies in Psychology.

Welcome Bro. Bob Metzger

Bro. Bob Metzger, a Marianist Brother from the U.S. has been part of our Province Administration for many years working in the highly-pressurised financial world. He is presently taking a break from all of that and will be living with our community. His work has been varied: from trying to keep up with the grass cutting at home to travelling to Rome to assist our General Adminstration and the General Administration of our sister-congregation, the Daughters of Mary, with their financial record keeping. We think it best if we keep him away from Brian Cowen.
