Every 7th Year student is timetabled for one period of ‘Life Skills’ each week. These classes focus on improving the pupils learning habits, time management, planning, and research skills. The basis of the class is to teach students the skills to succeed throughout the remainder of their education.
There are Life Skill’s Days during the year where the work that is done in the weekly classes is supplemented by full whole-day sessions. These comprise a combination of outside professionals, school staff and past 7th years.
A huge emphasis is placed on the CAO process during these periods and in one-on-one meetings. Every student must complete a ‘Guidance Project’ where they have to research courses they may be interested in. We also ensure that every student’s CAO application is fully researched and correctly filled in. Students are aided and instructed in their HEAR and DARE applications.
There is a mock interview evening in the spring. Students must complete a cover letter and CV. Students are thought interview skills and are given constructive feedback from the evening. On the night professionals, in their area, are brought in to interview the pupils. Every year we invite parents to take part in this hugely beneficial evening.
Outside of the ‘Life Skills’ classes students have access to individual guidance meetings throughout the year. Each pupil will have scheduled meetings, however the facility is there for students to arrange meetings whenever the need arrives. These meetings are tailored to suit the needs of the individual.
