Yellow Flag Programme

We, at St. Laurence’s, believe that living and working with people from cultures different to our own is an experience that everyone should have in life. It helps us to understand that being different is something to be celebrated and we all have so much to learned from each other. We are in strong support of the Yellow Flag Programme and are in the process of being awarded with a Yellow Flag. The Yellow Flag is presented to schools that are genuinely committed to inter-culturalism.

Schools are central to all our communities and a place of great influence outside of the home, where children and young adults begin to formulate the values and attitudes which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The Yellow Flag ensures that the culture and identity of all students is respected but also looks beyond the school population to develop a better understanding of the diversity that exists in Ireland as a whole.

The Yellow Flag is a practical and enjoyable programme that promotes & celebrates diversity at a formative stage in young people’s lives. It has a visible reward, the Yellow Flag itself, a symbol of inclusion & inter-culturalism.

At St Laurence College we are currently implementing the following nine steps of the project:

Saint Brigid’s Cross

The making of Saint Brigid’s Cross is an Irish tradition which has been carried out for centuries. These are made from carefully chosen and harvested rushes from the rivers and lakes of Ireland. The crosses are traditionally made on 1 February, which in the Irish Language is called Lá Fhéile Bhríde (St. Brigid’s feast day). 1st year enjoyed creating their own Brigid’s Cross last week while they recall stories of her life.

South Dublin Basketball Final

On Friday 25th January St. Laurence’s took on Colaiste Iosagain in the South Dublin Basketball League. The league has been in existence for over 30 years and populated by some of the best basketball schools in Dublin including Colaiste Iosagain, Loreto Dalkey, St. Joseph of Cluny, Teresian’s and St. Andrew’s.

St. Laurence’s achieved successive victories in getting to the final but were unfortunate in the final and were beaten by Colaiste Iosagain. The final was a thrilling encounter between two well-matched teams. St Laurence’s team includes Deanna McCluskey, Molly Gray, Caoimhe Kenny, Alice Holdsworth, Niamh Stapalton, Katie Judge, Shannon Byrne and Verna Wall.

Chaminade’s Day

On the 22nd of January we at St. Laurences celebrated Chaminade’s Day. A school mass for both the junior and senior cycle were held. St. Laurence College was established in 1967 by the Cincinnati Province of the Society of Mary (The Marianist Order), a religious congregation of priests and brothers founded in France in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. William Joseph Chaminade, now called by his liturgical title of Blessed Chaminade (April 8, 1761 – January 22, 1850), was a French Roman Catholic priest who survived persecution during the French Revolution.

The National History Museum & National Gallery Field Trip

Last week 6th year and 7th year art student visited The Natural History Museum and The National Gallery. This is an integral part of their Leaving Cert art history course. First they visited the National History Museum, Ireland’s premier cultural institution and home to the greatest collections of Irish material heritage, culture and natural history in the world. Then students went to the National Gallery to view the national collection of European and Irish Fine art. The exhibition they selected to case study was ‘A Light in the Darkness’ Turners Watercolours. The annual exhibition of Turner watercolours runs for the month of January in the Print Gallery of the National Gallery. It includes the Henry Vaughan Bequest of 31 watercolours bequeathed to the Gallery in 1900. Vaughan stipulated that the works be exhibited only in the month of January, when the natural light is weakest and at its least harmful. The National Gallery continues to adhere to this tradition, and as a result the works remain in pristine condition. This setting gave students the unique opportunity to learn in a different way, often making it easier for students to learn and retain the information learned.

Mock and Spring Examinations

Examinations will take place from Monday, February 20th until Friday, March 3rd incl for all students at the College. Students have been furnished with timetables and have attended assemblies, with Mr Carr, about the expected behaviour expected throughout this time. Parents/ Guardians are reminded that students must sit ALL exams for ALL THE SUBJECTS THEY STUDY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF:
CSPE: 1st and 2nd year students
SPHE: All classes
RE: All classes with the exception of 2L AND 3L grouping

Transition Year students have a specific timetable throughout the time involved.

2011 Colouring Competition Winner Announced

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2011/12 Colouring Competition is Paul Priestly, 6th class from St. Columbanus National School. The standard of entry was very high with many posters completed in glorious colour and showing plenty of imagination!

St. Laurence College wishes to thank all schools for their involvement in the competition and send a hearty congratulations to Paul Priestly who won a new iPod, as well as a gift for his hard working teacher!

Christmas Carol Service

Christmas comes but once a year and to mark the occasion both junior and senior pupils had their annual carol service today. They sang a collection of the best-loved Christmas Carols. It was clear the Christmas spirit was in the air.
