Students from the College contrbuted two projects to the exhibition.
Sam Hall, 5th year student, studied passes in Rugby and found out that many passes delivered at high speed are forward. This can be explained by Vector Theory, as the ball has motion in a forward direction from the player running as he passes.
Experiments and measurements were carried out with the help of some rugby-playing 7th years and players from Seapoint Rugby Club.
At the Exhibition a former UCD and Galway Corinthians forward shows interest in Sam Hall's project.
3rd years (Craig Flynn, Josh Hall and Darragh Hughes) completed a project called "Bet You Lose".
They investigated betting and specifically the margin a bookie has in multiple football bets. A multiple bet is where a punter bets not only on say Manchester United to win but rather on Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal all to win.
Whereas a punter betting on single can expect to get 85% of what he bets back in the long run, this becomes 72% (0.85 x 0.85) for doubles, and less than 50% for 5-game accumulators.
They analysed a couple thousand such bets and concluded that it was very bad value betting on multiples - hence "Bet You Lose".
Both projects got a lot of attention at the exhibition and Sam Hall in particular was very articulate and informative in explaining his work to judges, members of the public and the Minister for Education.
