English as an Additional Language

Our newly established EAL department aims to do the following to recognise and meet the needs of pupils who are learning English as an additional language. That is, pupils who have a home language other than English and who are in the process of learning to use English as an additional language through immersion in the curriculum and the broader life of the school.

E.A.L at St. Laurence College
Approximately 2% of our school population is from a minority ethnic group. Of these, the majority have been identified as E.A.L. pupils. Our E.A.L. pupils generally come from a small range of ethnic groups, are generally from a range of backgrounds and generally have different linguistic backgrounds. They generally arrive in our school with some prior experience of school and with some literacy skills in their home language.

At St. Laurence College we aim to that all our E.A.L. pupils participate in the life of the school and gain access to appropriately planned and prepared curricular provision. We aim to ensure that our E.A.L. pupils attain curriculum levels and public examination grades appropriate to their abilities. We aim to seek and make use of appropriate advice, guidance, support and training. We aim to monitor the progress of our E.A.L. pupils’ acquisition of English, of their general achievement and of their attainment in public examinations/end of year assessments.

Our E.A.L Room

At St. Laurence College we have a brand new room dedicated to EAL. In this space we teach and display the work of our EAL students.

Our EAL Teachers

Teachers also help students to access the curriculum by teaching them the range of language skills needed to do this, to make progress within it, and to take the relevant examinations. who are learning English as an additional language are recognised as having diverse needs which need appropriate support.
